Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a tour?

Each tour is scheduled for 3 hours (it may go longer). We will not rush you. If you are unable to budget 3 hours for a tour we highly suggest you look at some of the other available tours offered by other tour companies. We will walk approximately 3 miles total mostly on pavement with an elevation change of 100 feet. Some people may find this tour strenuous; please be prepared.

What makes our tour different than the other tours?

We will not rush you. We limit the tour groups to a maximum of 12 guests. We try our best to personalize your experience. We present accurate information about the living history of Arlington National Cemetery from a veteran’s perspective and from a perspective of a military member who previously worked at Arlington National Cemetery.

Can we witness a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery?

Yes, it is possible. Arlington National Cemetery is an active cemetery with up to 30 funerals every weekday. Out of respect for the deceased, their family, and their loved ones, we will not interfere with any funeral procession or service. If we come across a funeral procession we will maintain proper distance, remain still and silent, and render proper respect (right hand over heart) as the horse-drawn caisson passes.

What if the weather is bad?

All tours will proceed as scheduled regardless of weather conditions (with the exception of lighting within 5 miles of the cemetery, or official cemetery closure). The tour of Arlington National Cemetery is primarily outdoors. Please expect hot and humid summer conditions and chilly and sometimes snowy/icy winter conditions. Please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately (umbrellas are allowed).

Are there bathrooms available along the tour?

Yes. Bathrooms are located throughout the cemetery.

Is water available along the tour?

Yes. There are water fountains throughout the cemetery during the spring/summer months (turned off 1 October - 31 March). We highly encourage you to bring your own water bottle. Kids may require a snack.

Are there places to rest on the tour?

Yes, but they are few. Benches are available outside of Arlington House (top of the hill). Please plan to be on your feet for 3 hours.

What if I’m running late?

Please plan ahead to arrive on time. Driving, parking, riding the metro, and getting through security all takes longer than expected. Tours begin promptly at scheduled times. Out of respect to our other customers, we cannot wait on late visitors. You may attempt to meet up with the tour at the start point (the Military Women’s Memorial) during the introduction and overview portion of the tour (about 15 minutes), but please note that Eric will not restate any information already covered upon your arrival. As time allows during the remainder of the tour, Eric will revisit the missed information as able.

What are your cancellation policies?

You may cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the tour for a full refund by contacting us at vigilancetours@gmail.com or +1 (703) 343-5125. If you cancel less than 24 hours before the tour’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded. If the tour is canceled due to lightning within 5 miles of Arlington National Cemetery or official cemetery closure, you’ll be offered a different tour date or a full refund.
